Today I would like to tell you my story from this summer work experience 🙂
Every animal hospital in Sweden is confronted with a significant number of cases of dog adder bites during the summertime.
This is mainly because many adders live here in very clean, unpolluted forests.
When the dogs are bitten, muscle activity usually speeds up the spread of the poison in the body. Severe swelling occurs within two hours and severe pain, tachycardia, arrhythmia or signs of shock are common.
Treatment includes strict rest, analgesia with strong opioids, fluid therapy, continuous multiparameter monitoring, and hospitalisation is almost always required.
There is a specific antidote for this condition and I had a very warm feeling when I discovered that I could read the anti-venom leaflet in my mother language 🙂
I’ve never had a case of this disease in my country, so I didn’t know that the key treatment is imported from Poland.
