Pericardial effusion is a common form of cardiovascular disease in dogs, with pericarditis and cardiac neoplasia being the most common causes.
My patient Tyson was admitted to the hospital when his owner reported severe weakness and abdominal distension. Chest auscultation also revealed muffled heart sounds.
Radiographs showed an enlarged cardiac silhouette, pericardial and abdominal fluid was confirmed by fast scan and cardiac tamponade was diagnosed. Tyson needed a pericardiocentesis.
The pictures show my investigations: X-rays, fast scan, microscopic evaluation of the fluid and my patient recovering after the procedure 🙂
